What to Know About Pet Surgery
In the best interests of your pet, we require a physical examination appointment with one of our doctors prior to scheduling procedures.
Before the procedure is scheduled, our staff will explain the process to you, including any specific steps that should be taken before or after the surgery is performed. The day of the surgery, our staff will walk you through everything that will take place regarding your pet. From initial intake to sedation and general anesthesia, anesthesia monitoring, the procedure and recovery, you will know exactly what is planned for your pet after you leave them at the hospital.
Baseline laboratory testing ensures that there are no surprises on the day of your pet’s surgery. Knowing that your pet has normal blood test results can help prevent anesthetic complications or surgical complications such as excessive bleeding, which can occur when patients have low platelet counts or abnormal clotting.
When there is liver or kidney disease, this may affect the choices of anesthetic drugs recommended by your veterinarian, to prevent anesthetic complications and promote a smooth anesthetic recovery.
Food & Water Intake
A period of fasting may be necessary prior to pet surgery. Our staff will let you know what is advised.
Recovering After Pet Surgery
Some patients may be able to go home the same day as their procedure, whereas others may need an overnight stay or referral to a 24-hour care facility. The veterinary team will advise you as to what is best for your pet, and also discuss aftercare for your companion and any rechecks needed.
Many pets may not have their normal appetite right after surgery. If this is the case with your pet, make sure they get their normal amount of food and water the next morning.
Our veterinarian will provide pain medication and other post-surgical care instructions that are needed for your pet. Be sure to follow these instructions closely and provide only the medication prescribed to your pet to ensure their safety. Some medications prescribed for your pet may be ordered through our online store and delivered to your home.
As your pet recovers after surgery, make sure the surgery site is continuing to heal properly. If you see signs of swelling, discharge, or any sign of irritation, call us right away and bring your pet in for a check up.
